Grand Junction Company Rises from the Ashes to National Success A group of Grand Junction entrepreneurs overcame a plant closing and layoffs to start a successful new company and keep over $1 million in business in the Grand Valley. Action Publishing, Inc., makes custom day planner calendars and notepads for businesses, schools, and individuals nationwide. Over 300,000 students and teachers from kindergarten through college will start school this fall with an Action Agenda academic planner. “We’re quite proud of what this group has accomplished,” said Grady Busse, ABI president. “There have been hurdles, but we just handled each challenge as it came and never stopped believing success lay ahead.” Busse was inspired to create Action Bindery when longtime Grand Junction calendar manufacturer Envision Incorporated was sold in May 2001 and subsequently relocated to Fremont, Nebraska. Sensing an opportunity, Busse hand-picked a team of former Envision employees to found Action Publishing, Inc. “We started from scratch, but we had a powerful advantage,” Busse said. “We knew each other, knew the market, and knew how to do the job.” “We could have accepted offers to work in Nebraska, but nobody wanted to leave.” Instead, seven founders joined Busse in November 2001 to begin operations in the Business Incubator Center on Orchard Mesa. Within six months the company offered a full line of academic planners, and an annual edition for individuals and businesses, along with custom journals and notepads, is now being marketed for 2003. “Schools have been our biggest customer,” Busse said, “but we want to reach out to businesses and individuals in the Grand Valley.” Individuals can purchase a standard Action Agenda in person at the ABI offices or online at www.actionagendas.com. For businesses or bulk orders, Action Agendas can be customized with a company name and logo on the cover and an employee handbook, product brochure, phone directory, or other information bound inside. Companies can also order Action Notepads, Journals, or wall calendars with their logo printed on every page. “It’s an employee productivity tool, a customer appreciation gift, a personal time management tool, a family event schedule,” Busse said. “You can use an Action Agenda to plan your workday, keep track of the kids’ activities, or just jot down reminders of what you’d like to do this week.” The agendas work well for such diverse types of users, Busse said, because the underlying concept is simple and functional. Action Agendas are designed to help people explore three broad “action areas”: Self, Relationships, and World. “Our mission statement is ‘We all have the power to improve our lives, our relationships, and our world,’” Busse said. With full-color photos, inspirational sayings, action ideas, and goal setting areas, Action Agendas help users realize their power to make a difference and develop a plan for doing so. “It really is that simple,” Busse said, “and it works. We’re living proofbuilding a strong business from the ground up, creating jobs in a tight economy, and staying part of a community we all care about. That’s how I measure success.” |
